MATERNITY: A SERIES OF SORTS

I've unearthed chapter two of my final year's Maternity: The Series blog post. You can read chapter one here. Enjoy!

Chapter Two: Specimen

Specimen A: Fat, Fertile, Females
You’d think they’d be a merry bunch of moms-to-be, glowing with a wonderful radiance of baby joy, light from their happy faces turning everything into gold or sparkly unicorns or Ribeena.
But no.

Bellies protruding, shalwars askew
They’re busy sharing their blood-curdling cries with the general room.

They’ve stuff ranging every shape, size and colour popping out of them any place, any time, the hygienest of which is their urine dripping Foleys.

Specimen B: Nazi Nurses
A sisterhood to beware of, competent yet sulky
They’re a right cross between Hitler and Hulky.*

Nurses. The ultimate power steaming houses of the ward. Smile at them and they’ll teach you how to pass an IV. Frown and you’ve earned yourself the fury of the Fuehrer. Naughty, Nazi Nurses.
*Hulky: a female counterpart of the Hulk.**
**Yeah it’s on the lame side… but jeez I had to rhyme.

Specimen C: Bachelorette PGs
Mad on the inside, fuming on the out
Give it up for livid banshees who scold and shout!

I’m not sure if it’s the tough schedule that they have, the illiterate patients that they have to deal with, too many females being cramped up in too little a space or the fact that the fingers they’re using to deliver kids are still ring less. Probably an amalgam of everything mentioned. With a few exceptions, most of the PGs are livid. Irate. Furious. I’ve never seen doctors this rude ever. They yell, shout, holler at the poor moms-to-be, curse them for not arranging blood on time and when scrape goat med kids are in sight… well you can guess what happens. You wilt faster than you can say salted earthworms. So beware the Bellowing Banshees!

Goodbye, King Edward!

How do you say goodbye?

To seventeen years of being a student. Seventeen years of backpacks, pencil cases, papers, class rooms and teachers. How do you say goodbye? To a journey marked with so many landmarks: your first illegible doodles with a pencil at preschool, the splashes and blotches of your first fountain ink pen at school, the last rushed ball pointed lecture notes of university. How do you say goodbye? To a lifestyle that molded and shaped you for so many years, a lifestyle that defined who you were and what you wanted in life.

And how do you say goodbye to a place you’ve spent half a decade of your life at? How can you articulate anything that could sum up all the gratitude and affection you feel for an institute that’s given you so much?

04.10.2013. My last official day at KE. At 2 p.m. I sat on the high wall opposite KE’s main ground gazing at Patiala’s majestic white domes. There was a calmness and stillness in the air and not a soul in sight. Perfect. She looked proud, Patiala did… at least to me. Proud of the journey her children had made. They had braced nightmarish professionals, insanely timed maternity duties and lengthy ward hours. They could have crumbled and crushed under the weight of all of that. Yet here they were. The teenagers of yesteryears now soon-to-be doctors of tomorrow.
A word cloud of memories seemed to be floating in the air. The good, the great and the not so wonderful moments all swirling and whirling around. But the feeling I’m glad I got the most of was of contentment. KE had honed whatever little there was in me of oratory, writing and creativity, providing me with platforms of expression I hadn’t ever imagined I’d get. It taught me free spiritedness and independency. Creativity and craziness. How to stick to my principles and what I believe in. It gave me friends and oodles of laughter. It taught me that every disheartening dusk would always be followed by a glorious dawn. It helped me discover inner strength and fortitude. And particularly this final year, it gave me the most wonderfully memorable learning experience possible.

Your colleagues will move on and branch out. Familiar faces and voices, their laughter that once echoed the halls, the characteristic present each roll number said, the moments spent, the memories made will never be again. Life and time will move on. KE too will move on, even presently it’s bustling with hitherto unknown juniors.

The child within you has a nagging feeling of wanting to hold on. The adult outside can’t wait for life’s next adventures and to make the most out of them. As a whole, I guess you’re somewhere in-between… gently soothing the child to let go… urging the adult to look ahead but not to forget the past years.

You can take a Kemcolian out of KE but you can’t take KE out of a Kemcolian.

There was a flock of birds on KE’s main ground. My friend A. Kohli, who was with me, and I looked at each other and grinned. We put on our white overalls that were covered from head to toe with colourful goodbye messages from class mates. On the count of three we raced into the ground setting all the birds soaring into the air around us. There was a rush of wings left, right and forward moving majestically over the sky field above, rising to the great domes of Patiala. It was the single most wondrous moment I’d ever experienced. A befitting end. Out chase your dreams and Altapete.

MATERNITY: A SERIES OF SORTS

Chapter One: Places

The Labour Rooms
Say hello to long hours of standing. And more standing. And more standing. And more. Standing.
If it’s time well spent though, you do end up becoming the rootenest tootenest fastest IV injectin ’, Foley passin’, gluteal IM givin’ medic in the west. And with the ever increasing rate of incontinating bladders that’s sayin’ something y’all.

The Delivery Rooms
Boy, is this one dynamite room! You go from puking your insides out at the head-clouting stench, to awing and ahhing at the cute lil new borns.
PS. I delivered a placenta here!
PPS. It’s a strictly PG 18 room! Enough said.

The Jhoolay
Whether you’re feverish to reconnect with your inner child or plain frantic to flee from ferocious PGs, Lady Wellingdon has the best escape route to offer: jhoolay. A park full of them, right in the hospital grounds. So whenever the routine makes you too hot in the head, a little to-froing on the swings’ll cool you down. Light headed coolness guaranteed. (Or cool-headed lightness… your pick!)

The Mess
The food isn’t exactly lip smacking tasty but those long labour room hours can sure make you hungry. And amidst knee-bending hunger pangs and tummy rumbles, the mess doesn’t seem too bad. Biryani, daal, chicken saalan, haleem all served by a sort-of-deaf, short-sighted Baba jee (mostly seen in a nifty skeleton shirt). What’s better is that you get dinner-and-a-show… D4 never missed an epi of zindagi gulzar hai during our rotation, courtesy the mess’s tele. I was familiarized with the latest Turkish sensation hitting our screens (Fatima Gul) there too.

The Occasional Escape: Foodstreet
The best part of maternity, far out!
So what’s in store? Succulent barbecued chicken that could make your taste buds swell with joy, scrumptious gol gappay with a crunch so electrifying it makes your hair stand on end, luscious chicken tawa and handi that could make the hardest heart melt with its delectability… food to be first flavoured then savoured, and finally devoured… sigh it’s a food heaven if there ever was one!

Wow

Yesterday's class Talawat was SO Brilliant! It was amazing! The rhythm, voice, tone.. perfect! Incredible! I went into reminiscence of Saudia and Harm...
If you're raising eyebrows hey I had to write about it's awesomeness somewhere... intentionally not being in our class's cheap fb group has its occasional disadvantages!

Hope to hear it again. Praise for the person.

Our Bake Sale!

I've just come back from uni!!!

Our bake sale was AWESOME!!!!

It had been raining for SO long n all of us were thinkin... here's another event that might get bummed.. like Retro... :P But... wohoooo the rain stopped, the weather was hell cool... and hum CHAAAaaa GAI!!
No comparison with the juniors for once!
We sold everything SO fast... all the food items were seriously yummy, games were SO fun (GO SADAF!! : D), everything was coordinated for once. Organisers did a hell of a good job. Ah. Bliss! I'm so happy for our class! It's been years since we've done a cool thing ON the day we're supposed to do it.. :D Great!! GREAAAAAAT!!! ;D ;D

My kebabs actually sold too ;D

So We took part in the treasure hunt... we were told to find a red tag on a red flowered tree along the path... off we went...the 3 of us. Ok first I thought the thing we were looking for might be this kulfa stick stuck in the tree.. but my friends pointed out sense :D We went back to re-hear the hint from Sadaf... went hunting again.... were thiiiis close to giving up... started jokin that we should start pouring our hearts out next to the tree cause we'd failed... when the breeze blew... and from under a leaf... peaked something red.. spotted by ZUZU !!! Yaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy!!!

We won :D

That being said, the only downer were people (actually 1 person) who would get O.V.E.R. in conversing while selling. UGH. Touba haiii. It was high rated BADTAMEZI that's what. SO I.r.r.i.t.a.t.i.n.g! All 3 of us were irritated!!!
But who cares, all the collections are going to go to a good cause...
Equipment for South Surgical and East Medicine wards... which are both where I had my rotations! Surreal!

A toast to the awesome-ness of our class! I'm so proud n happy! : ' )

Fraternity at KE

SO we've been helping F.AK sell KE-logo-imprinted Mugs at zero point for some days, for 'AKHUWAT KE CHAPTER'. The experience lead us to realize that KE has:
Buy a MUG and help the POOR

----) People who are born to just comment and do nothing! grrr :/

----) People who have the largest of hearts, and warmly spend when they hear the name 'charity' even without seeing the mug :)

----) People who have NO etiquettes and sadly haven't been taught not to sneer/snigger in public at others :/

----) People who are willing to stop and listen politely to what you say, even if they cant buy :)

----) People who might seem kinda whacky or proud but who yank out cash cause they surprisingly have a big heart hidden inside them :)))))

----) People who have been blessed with huge TALENT, yet they think charity is LAME, and make g.r.o.s.s. faces when they hear the word :/ :/ (SERIOUSLY! It was like we were asking them to step onto dung or something :0) I pity these talented ones the most!

----) People who spend AAAAAlot on food and at the funfair but who furiously shake their heads when it comes to charity :0

----) People who didn't have the cash then but who went and borrowed it, and came back to get a mug awwww :)))))))))

----) People who reply instantly with a yes on texts :) and those who don't bother to rep back :0

----)People who have great courtesy and buy the mug only cause they know you, and are willing to help you, and cause they're great colleagues :))))))))))))))))))

May Allah accept our efforts.
It was a huge eye opener, this experience. We learnt that complete strangers can be so polite and generous, or utterly rude; and that people you know can be extremely cold or exceedingly warm. That people you've judged to be arrogant are actually quite generous and that people you believe were nice, aren't so.
I'm glad I've learned that. Amusing. :D

DIL TOU RONA NAHIN

I am NOT a music fan... various reasons; There's religious... n then taste... I'm not into all those mushy romantic songs ppl have saved in their cells (My two exceptions: I really really really like When you Say Nothing at All- Ronan Keating and At the beginning -from Anastasia)... I hate those terrible Bollywood songs that are waaaaaaaay too in nowadays (anybody say Munni and I'm grabbing a dagger!)
Ai Jawan- Pure Pakistani-ism at its best!

What I love to hear are Pak-patriotic songs like Dil sai, Junoon, Ai Jawan, Tera Karam Molla, Hum hain Pakistani ...Beautiful beautiful songs, that have so many memories and so much meaning to them... Aww reminds you of the superb 90s don't they.. :') Yeah so anything patriotic gets me going. And of course sport songs!! Wavin Flag, Waka Waka, Stand up for the Champions... or songs on life like It's my life, Summer of 69, MJ's Beat it, Black or White, Heal the World...

But I came across this vid. It's lyrics are very touching! AND IT'S SHOT AT KE!!!!! Like WOW!!
The vid makes KE look like some sort of ultra cool palace!
It's so encouraging that yes, you still have time to fulfil all those ambitions you've dreamt up, all those wishes you've hoped would come true...

And then I came across this; the same song, sung slowly with shots of the terrible earthquake we went through a few years back:

Now This vid really inspired me. There are so many people who have to go through so much. Look at what they have to face. Dead families. Lost limbs. I can't imagine having to go through that.
I'm going to work hard now, so that I can help people like that, whenever they need me. I'll try to dry as much tears as I can. Dil tou Rona Nahin.
God bless Pakistan. Forever and Ever. May we have PEACE.

Politics

I like our girls' rep. She's v. supportive, is always bright when you meet her and doesn't get angry a bit when you bombard her with texts about tests. She's not the bravest person but she's got a lot of good in her.

Now I know with experience that some of the girls in our class (think annoying attitudes plus wheezy whines plus constant complaints) are hard to deal with. I mean, the class vid, halloween, cine star... my friends and I got a huge thumbs up for them all... WE know what we had to go through to get all those jobs done. Some girls just don't have their own opinions, they can never make a decision on time, they act too sophisticated to care when you ask them to take part in a class event (even though they're the loudest loudspeakers when it comes to discussing that our class lags in events and unity! *hypocrites*!)

Now one of these girls came up to me with a political proposal that shocked me.

If you've read a particular post of mine or read my 3 points on the Left hand side, you'd know I'm heavily against politics. Of any kind. Of any sort. It's wrong. It's unfair. It's mean. And it leaves an undeserving someone hurt.

I'm not going to write what she said. All I'll say is that I defended our rep. And I told the girl how it was natural for someone to get angry with her when her participation's zero and complaint level sky high.

Her proposal was I admit, tempting. But cause of the impossibly dry moods and sophisticated mannerisms of fellow female classmates, and the hypocrisy that I just witnessed,  my answer was and is, no.

Could Sultan Rahi....?

The Sun COULD stop shining...

Earth and Mars COULD have a cosmic intergalactic collide, killing... well ...everyone (except pesky Lahori mosquitoes)...

Morning show hosts COULD show up with a brain...

The Twilight films COULD finally have a plot...

Ijaz Butt COULD lose his tond...

But..
BUT...
bUttttt.....

Our Pharma attendant .. Sultan Rahi could not, COULD NOT turn friendly....
Nope.
Impossible!!
But, oddly enough...
The impossible has turned possible, and S.R. has gone... dare I say it... friendly!

My every day 25-minute late arrivals (Oh come on don't raise eyebrows!! I'm immune to alarm clocks ok!) for pharma, have gone from annoying Sultan Rahi, to turning him soft.

Sultan Rahi... :O... No more?

Let's hope Sultan Rahi's turned a new gun leaf, which for me would mean, coming really late for pharma and still getting a 'present' tick :D... hehehe amusing ;D

Let's keep our finger's crossed.

*Hey, just thinking... If S.R.'s turned nice, then anything's possible, anything... Uh oh, I'm expecting a bump from Mars any minute now :O...
(Hey is it just me, or is that mosquito near my arm, looking devilishly happy right now?! :o Worst fears confirmed!)

Finally...

This year's kemcol's (our uni mag) been really exciting to read. It's different and creative.
Glancing through the student-essay section I came across an article, Finally Final Year. It's nostalgic and honest, and it's last words seem extremely relevant to KEMunian life:

'Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice, heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.'

'There's nothing like being a golden ray in so much grey' :D- Amused Medic
(*...trying 2make a quote :P)

Beautiful. Precise. SO RELEVANT. From all my experience, Can't agree more.
;D

Bummer Days-1

I'm not taiz by nature, and a lot of the world is.

There, I said it!

Lemme give an example, when there's a bunch of students and myself, waiting to get onto the pu bus.. I'm usually the one who gets pushed around. I might have been standing somewhere waaaaaaay infront, but thanks to everyone around me pushing to make way for themselves, I'm almost always the last to get up the bus. And that rule holds for any line. Like in a shop, getting out of a place... I dunno, I think it's polite to give  way, and to wait. Why the rush? We're all going to make it aren't we? Why the rudeness?

Anyway, this rule of mine sort of defines how I've dealt with all the other things in my life.
And (well uptil now) I've been so proud of that!
In wanting to achieve my life's ambitions, I've never elbowed people out. I've waited and given them space. Contrary, to most students, I haven't fretted about how well someone else is doing. I've wanted the best for myself, naturally, but that desire never turned into leg-pulling or down playing other people. I always had (and still have) this indestructible belief that, God WILL reward you, for playing things clean. That leg-pulling someone now, would have fate leg-pull you in the future.

Don't think bad or harm others in whatever you pursue, and you'll succeed.

Yeah stay simple. Saadhay.

When med school started, the thing that bothered me the most was its survival of the fittest atmos. That you had to be sharp, aware, well-informed, competitive if you wanted to survive. Trust me, the shrewdness of some people here, literally scared me. Geeeeez I wasn't like them! LOLz, I remember flunking my first physio oral, cause I had no idea that we were having one! Anyway, I made some loyal friends, and things worked out :D

The e.v.e.n.t.s. that happened recently, have made me realize, I mean really realize that yes people can be very taiz and selfish to the point of elbowing other people out and crushing their rights. That there are people who think it's ok to do whatever, to get what they want for themselves. That they can turn you into sheesh kabab and have no regret.
It was this realisation that made yesterday, and a few days before, total bummers.
It hurt. It really did.
When it happened a few days before, confused, I told my friends that it would be best to ignore.
But then, this certain someone did it again.
Ouch. shock. hurt.

'You've got to make a stand for your right, because you deserve this more than any one,' Zuzu said to me today. And now, hit twice, I think Zuzu's right.
I'm out of my thinking-limbo: It's time to take a clear stand.

I Like this quote I dislike this quote

“You fight for your rights when your rights are being denied. When the building is on fire, you don't stand by and let the building burn down and say we'll fight the fire another day.”

-Robert Gilbert

It's time to believe.

Bummer Days

God, the last two days have been.... ugggggh absolutely NOT amusing!
You know, when things aren't going your way at ALL.

Events happening one after another left me sad and angry... But, thanks to some quiet reflection and my superb friends, I'm feeling all better :).

Still, I'd like to recall some of these happenings, and vent out my emotions. Hey, what else is a blog for? :P

The Rebel...that fell

Ok.. so we had a biochem genetics test the last day before our eid hols...
Fasts... a horrid syllabus and ooo-eid's-coming!! feelings must have had something to do with NOONE wanting to prep for the test... I mean more than the usual :P

But like always,
bang our heads against our books we did...
show up the test day, we did...
and buy answer sheets from our uni's photocopy shop to write what-nots, we did...

Test time: We find out the test's out of syllabus!
Arrray waaah ye tou kisi ko be nai ata.... shukaaaaaar.. Yes! Yes!..  bach gai!!
uhh what I meant was: how horrible!

We protested, then got a lecture from granny...
Protested some more, and got a bigger, louder lecture from granny...

I put my pen down.
I Smelled it.
I Heard it.
I Felt it.
The scent, the call, the feel of a Rebellion.

My Thoughts then: Come on this is it!! Noone wants to give it right! We don't even know it! So we should just Walk out!!!! Boycott!!!!!!! Strike!!!!!!!!! Bhook hartaal if we have to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took a glance at Mango shake on my right. She was still frantically writing like anything (a thing I find seriously freaky), completely deaf to the LOOOOUD rebellion calls in the air. She looked up just once: to tell me to not waste time n continue writing.

My Thoughts then:  Kia likon agr kuch ata nahein and she could break her hand at that speed!

And then, we all heard it: slogans, shouts. The misters in our class weren't giving the test.

My Thoughts then: Cool! and hey, do my thoughts have a loudspeaker somewhere...uh oh :P

A msg was conveyed to the girls to do the same. Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd of course:

We.just.sat.there.and.did.nothing.
I looked expectantly at our G.R.. Twice. And said Chalo! Chalo! She was willing. I could tell. She just needed a push. Sadly, that didn't come. I'd credit granny for that. She went all this'll cost you in your prof!! And you know what words like that can do to girls. Sigh.

My Thoughts then: Awww No rebellion??!! and hmmm granny must have had zero friends when she was in med school.

In the end, give the test, we did... Giving it was more agonising than...than... getting bitten by a centipede (trust me! it just happened recently)

Our teachers kept saying that what the misters did was stupid.
Yet, it was us who gave a stupid test, with stupid answers, that'll probably just win us stupid marks.
My Thoughts then and now: Who's the real stupid one??!!

Holzzzz with a reflection!

So we've got a month of scrumptious holidays to pass through! wohoooo ;D

Our last uni day was typical in the sense that we were given a breathtakingly beautiful end of term present by everybody's fav depart... Yup you guessed right!

-A test
-By the man slayers in physio

But we all managed to squirm through it...

AND the non-typical part... a kfc feast with my buds under an awesome weather :D not to forget the laptop show we had. Cracking at the cd we were watching, our laughs bubbled through the air around the white domes of a then deserted KE. Clearly all had fled to have an afternoon of fun with their friends.

This last amusing uni day has made me realize;

a. The weather ALWAYS gets mysteriously awesome whenever we have a physio test...hmm could tip the weather forecasters next time ;p

but more importantly

b.That I've grown fond of life at this white domed mansion of ours (ok that’s a little too many gasps people!).

Staring at pictures from our class function this year,
and then at the convocation pictures of our ex-final in the paper, I get mixed feelings… The ultimate reward of five strained years of tests, giant books and snore-inducing lectures handed to you-your degree- with every student dressed in a graduation gown befitting the occasion perfectly… you just can’t wait for THAT DAY to come! Yet on the other hand, there’s the fact that we have just a few years of uni life to go-and then it'll all be gone. What started from nursery-our student life-would have ended.
Those once together from so many different places, sharing moments of both joy and sadness; laughing at lecture room jokes, slapping high fives, getting tense when a big test was around the corner and then partying after it’d ended… would from then forward have to go their own ways, each having to face the harsh 'real world' out there that student life always seems so separate from.

Pbheeeeeew... sorry! Just had to blow my nose on a tissue there... I'm getting all senti... :' )

I’d like to mention here some cool words by our demo instructor, Sir Ameen. He commented a few weeks ago, that everyone ultimately DOES pass through med-life…the difference is that some just spend their days of youth wrapped in a constant grouchy mood, rote learning their texts all the time while others find time and room to have fun and rock. The latter he believed were better.
The words seemed odd to be coming from Sir Ameen- our serious, smooth, suave gross instructor (also known to be a walking Grays and one of the few demos whose lecture is actually worth listening to!). But him saying it sort of made it official, authentic, realistic and sound.
Sooooo word of advice from Amused Medic by all of this-

'Enjoyth thy uni life whilst thy haveth'- even if it means giving stinky endo and brain tests... a day will come when we'll actually miss all this!

Ks & Qs of 2008-2013... f.m.a. PRODUCTION!!!

So we FINALLLLLLLLLLLY had our Class Function :D

and an announcement... yours truly has just been voted 'Most likely to become PM'
... wOoOhoOoO and better more... a great pal of mine has been given the award of 'Most Accident Prone' ;p ;p Now THAT'S the F.M.A. spirit :D

BUT THE MOST AWEEEESOMEEEEEE THIIIIIIIING OF AAAAALL!!!!!!!!!!!!
F.M.A. productions' presentation: 'Ks and Qs of K.E. batch 08-13'

Throwing away all modesty... it was THE BEST item of the evening, the MOST ROCKING AWESOME ULTUMATE COOOOL video there could be made of this class.... covering all our achievements as a class, events and what we've been through together; with pics showing our Kemcolian life of fun, books (:-s), and victories.... it was MASHALAH the MOST ENTHUSIASTICALLY RECEIVED ITEM OF THE EVENT! ... Just can't forget how we were ALL, cheering the pics to the beat of 'STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS...' AWWWWWWWWW

Nooo that is NOT a tear in my eye...NO I'm NOT getting emotional....it's...it's... just the sun in my eyes! what mom?? O yeah good night to you too...uhhhh ooooopsss ;p ;p ;p
In the end, a quick word: loved the way our class as a whole took part in the function.... We rocked! ;D

EXPECTING THE EXPECTED!

If you’re a second year kid at KEMU… you’d have gotten your biochem test result today.

Ahem….

Ahem ahem…

Ahem ahem ahem…

With more red Fs than there are stars in the sky, worms in the ground, nerds in our class…the result sheet looked more red than a blushing red-gowned bride…hmmm

With all those on-the-spot invented answers… questions that seemed from another subject( yesss the biochem dept’s SEVERE inferiority complex with the physio dept has reached a new level people!!! Glucose transporters?? I ASK YOU!!) and the teeny tiny fact that I’d spent the whole day before (and the day before!) at a cousin’s wedding… this wasn’t unexpected. And with what almost every person I know has gotten on their tests… seems like EVERYONE was busy getting their COUSINS MARRIED!… heck no wonder the result’s like a blushing bride!!

So now its time to celebrate the FRATERNITY OF FLUNKHOOD. Yayyyyy!!!!!!! Cheers to all fellow flunkers!

You’ve made me proud (sob!)…

Like always… how amusing ;D
