On following your heart, making your own decisions and adding them up when it matters :
...You can't connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something... your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.
On the three things life indiscriminately distributes to us all:
Loss
It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it.
Love
...The only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.
and Death
almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.
I remember reading the following as part of an article in our uni mag Kemcol 2010. It struck me then as it does now, listening to this video. I even quoted it in a post... I didn't know then of course that they were Jobs' words:
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
What an amazing legendary person. He inspires you MACnanimously, in so many ways*.
I haven't been working in med school, like I've really wanted to at all, it's a realisation that struck me hard a few months ago. I've stopped creatively thinking, questioning, being inquisitive... being hungry for being a doctor... even though this has truly been what I've always wanted. It is what I want.
I've been putting my mind to it now, and coming across this awe-inspiring Jobs vid couldn't have been timed better.
I've been putting my mind to it now, and coming across this awe-inspiring Jobs vid couldn't have been timed better.
If there's a right time it's now, if there's a person's words to draw inspiration from, they're his:
It's time to
.....Yes sir! *Crunch!* |
Afterthought: Not everyone in the world can get what Jobs got.. following your heart sounds so great to do... but then there are people with bad voices who dream about being rock stars... which just isn't going to happen.
ReplyDeleteI think dreaming whilst realising where your talents lie... is nailing it...
Hmmm...
'almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.'
ReplyDeleteAll of a sudden the blogosphere has buzzed up with news of someone called steve jobs...only later did i realize I have actualy listened to this guy's speech that you've posted above...May his sould rest in peace
You've discussed thing that REALLY matter Amused...being hungry for being a doctor !Loved reading your thoughts !
Be Hungry Be foolish... both are faces of a same coin...if you're hungry to learn , you'll have to stand appearing foolish to ask questions. Our fear in wards is not that we'll be ignorant , its that we'll let our foolishness
be exposed ... How foolish ! next year ( InshaAllah) I'll adopt a ritual ; a ritual o remind myself now and again : Stay hungry , Stay foolish ...
yes...i was going to say something similar to what Sadaf said. i didn't reaaly realize until after Jobs passed away...that it was HIS speeches i had heard clips of...on tv...and i remember hearing it was someone who had cancer...who was dying...and he was traveling around...giving inspiring speeches...about LIVING LIFE and so on.
ReplyDeleteit's kind of sad...and always bothers me a bit...that AFTER someone 'famous' passes away...the media doesn't stop talking about them. yes, it's a loss...he did and said some GREAT things...but so did so many OTHER people...who the world never gets to hear about.
i like the quote you have there...be hungry. be foolish. ~ now i will have to go find MORE of his quotes...i bet there are more than i can read in one sitting!
anyway...thanks for BEING AMUSED...thanks for sharing your thoughts...this was a nice tribute to Jobs...a genius of a man i guess...when it came to knowing what is the next best thing people want...
and he had a lot of inspiring things to say...when he realized he was going to die...
so sad....
on a brighter note!! it's friday!! have a great weekend!! don't WORK too hard! :)
So timely your video post. Wanted to find it recently. To hold that kernel, the seed, of what helps us stay on a growing path.
ReplyDeleteLoving to learn... to lean to the sun ... like a plant that needs energy. And willing to be without shame, to stand in the cold blowing rain storms in our life.
Been through a few storms lately. Thanks for your stopping by then.
GOOD LUCK ON YOUR EXAMS. And again you are sending me energy with this video. How did you know I wanted to see it again? We must have some intertwined roots in this big planet, Earth...the forest does extend far. [pun intended!]
...i stopped in here...because i just wouldn't believe, as my 'google reader' was saying...that it's been since the beginning of Cctober that you posted! i had to see with my own eyes!!
ReplyDeletei hope you're ok...and just working hard, as usual...and if that's the case...then i say...take a breather!!
sending good thoughts your way.... :)
